CargoMax Direct Damage Stability (DDS) module for tankers is the first to be type approved by LR.

The CargoMax Direct Damage Stability (DDS) module gives tankers crews means to prove compliance with MARPOL, IBC, BCH or IGC codes intact and damage stability requirements for any loading condition by assessing a number of pre-defined damage cases. Such proof of compliance is attained without imposing any explicit loading restriction to the ship, thus simplifying greatly the task of distributing and maximizing cargo for all ships operating with partial, parcel and split-port loads.

HSSI initially developed its CargoMax DDS module for Stolt Tankers - a major owner and operator of chemical carriers - receiving DNV type approval as far back as 1995. After receiving specific class approval on hundreds of successive installations for all oil majors from DNV, ABS, BV and LR itself, HSSI recently received General Approval for the CargoMax DDS module by Lloyds Register. This was the first of such General Approvals granted by LR, who - as a result of several months of in depth discussion on the subject - has also developed new software approval guidelines in line with the IACS UR L5 requirements.

The introduction of IACS UR L5 has some important implications for tanker vessels. In fact, in LR's interpretation of this regulation "where an installed program has a stability calculation capability, it is generally recommended that it is certified for use. However, for programs installed on a ship contracted for construction on or after 1 July 2005, it is a Classification requirement that the software is approved for use and it is to be capable of performing the calculations and checks necessary to assess compliance with all the stability requirements applicable to that specific ship".
